Stress.

But what if your body isn’t breaking down.

What if it’s trying to communicate?

The Truth About Pain

Pain in perimenopause and menopause is rarely random.

It’s often driven by:

Chronic inflammation

Hormonal shifts

Gut dysfunction

Nervous system overload

And the key to healing isn’t guessing. It’s learning how to observe.

The LISTEN Method

A simple framework to begin decoding your symptoms:

L – Look at Patterns
When does your pain show up? Do you have morning stiffness? Or afternoon only headaches? Or more pain at night? Timing matters more than you think.

I – Inflammation Clues
What is triggering inflammation in your body? Food, stress, and toxins all play a role. And inflammation is at the root of most pain during perimenopause and menopause.

S – Stress & Sleep
This is a big one that is often overlooked. You cannot eat super healthy and exercise but NOT sleep and NOT handle stress well and expect to get better. It’s all connected in your body. Your nervous system directly impacts your pain levels. High cortisol equals more pain, more inflammation, and slower healing.

T – Triggers
Your body has specific sensitivities and triggers. What are yours? Start identifying them. Maybe yours is gluten which causes joint pain and bloating. Or maybe sugar which is causing your headaches or fatigue. Or maybe toxins from fragrances, chemicals, plastics you’re using in the house which causes skin issues or brain fog.

E – Energy & Digestion
Your gut and mitochondria are telling a story. Do you feel energized after a meal or exhausted? Do you have bloating, constipation, or reflux an hour or so after a meal? Your gut is central to everything including hormones, inflammation, and even pain. If your gut is not working right, you won’t have energy to live life.

N – Next Steps
This is where most women get stuck. They notice symptoms, but don’t know what to do next. You don’t need perfection, just awareness and a small action.

Start Simple

You don’t need a complicated protocol.

Start here:

Track your symptoms

Notice patterns

Remove one trigger (maybe gluten for 7-10 days)

Support sleep

Clarity comes from consistency with small steps.

Encouragement

Your body is not your enemy.

It’s your messenger.

And when you learn to listen, you can finally begin to feel better and heal.

I created a simple Pain Pattern Tracker to help you apply this.

👉 Click here and I’ll send it to you.

Leah Cheshire is a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach who works with women over 40, helping them get to the root of their symptoms so they feel like themselves again. As estrogen levels drop, inflammation can rise.

This can show up as:

Joint pain and stiffness

Muscle aches

Increased sensitivity to pain

Flare-ups of previous injuries

This isn’t your body breaking down. Such as vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.

I want to gently tell you today that:

You are NOT lazy.
You are NOT lacking discipline.

There’s a very real chance your body is simply depleted.

This is something I see all the time with the women I work with, especially for those over 40 and 45.

They are doing ALL the things.
Taking care of everyone else.
Trying to eat healthy.
Pushing through their day.

But inside, they feel:

Exhausted

Irritable

Unmotivated

Foggy

And they start to believe something is wrong with them.

And they assume it’s due to:

Hormones

Stress

Not trying hard enough

When in reality, their body is running on empty.

Why This Happens

As we move into perimenopause and menopause, a few things happen:

Our nutrient needs actually go UP

Our absorption can go DOWN (especially with gut issues like IBS)

Chronic stress depletes key nutrients even faster

So even if you’re eating ‘pretty healthy’…
your body may still be lacking what it needs to function well.

And when your body is depleted, your brain feels it. Your mind feels it. Your body feels it.

And this affects all areas of health — physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.

Common Deficiencies

I want to highlight a few key nutrients that directly impact your mood and energy:

Magnesium

Calms the nervous system

Helps with sleep, anxiety, irritability (and also regularity of digestion)

B Vitamins

Support energy, focus, and brain function

Low levels = fatigue, brain fog, low motivation

Omega-3s

Support mood and reduce inflammation

Low levels linked to depression and mood swings

Iron (especially for some women)

Needed for oxygen and energy

Low levels = exhaustion, weakness, poor focus, feeling drained

So if you’re feeling:

Drained

Overwhelmed

Unmotivated

it may not be mindset…
it may be biochemistry.

Mood Buster

I always want to give you something simple you can start with right now.

Here’s your Mood Buster for this week:

Add ONE magnesium-rich food daily. Most adults need about 310 – 420 mg per day. And we absorb about 30-40% from foods. So start with food.

Some easy options:

Leafy greens (such as spinanch)

Pumpkin seeds (raw organic, soaked, and roasted or dehydrated)

Almonds (same as above)

Avocado (1 has 58 mg of magnesium)

You can also add a magnesium supplement such as magnesium glycinate, too.

This is a small step, but small steps done consistently help rebuild your body.

What Low Energy is Not

Remember:

Low energy is NOT a personality flaw

Low motivation is NOT a character issue.

It’s often simply a biological signal.

I really want you to hear this part…

You don’t need more willpower.
You don’t need to ‘try harder.’

You need to support your body differently in this season of life.

Because when your body is nourished:

your energy improves
your mood stabilizes
your motivation returns naturally

That’s how God designed your body.

Don’t overcomplicate it. Just start nourishing your body consistently.

Faith Integration

And I also believe this.

We’re not meant to live in constant exhaustion and burnout. God didn’t create us that way.

Your body is not working against you. It’s communicating with you.

And sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is:

Slow down

Listen

Nourish

And invite God into our healing process

Next Step

If this is resonating with you, and you’re thinking, ‘This is me… I feel depleted…’

I want to invite you to take the next step.

I offer a free consult where we look at:

Your symptoms

Your nutrition

Your lifestyle

And we create a simple plan to help you start feeling like yourself again.

You don’t have to figure this out alone.

Just click this link to book your free consult. We can talk and see if we’d be a good fit to work together. I’ve helped myself and many others. It begins with helping your body feel safe again.

Here are a few powerful (and often overlooked) ways to start:

🌿 1. Use Your Breath to Calm Your Body

Your breath is one of the fastest ways to communicate with your nervous system.

Try this:

Inhale slowly (count of 4)

Hold for a count of 5

Exhale longer than you inhale (cound of 6)

👉 That longer exhale signals safety and begins to shift your body into a calmer state.

🌿 2. Practice “Unhurried Moments”

Many women are constantly rushing even when they don’t feel stressed.

But your body feels that urgency.

Try intentionally slowing down. Try these:

Eat more slowly

Walk more slowly

Give yourself space between tasks

👉 Slowing down is a direct signal of safety to your body.

🌿 3. Try the Orienting Technique

This is simple but incredibly effective.

Take 30 seconds to look around your environment:

Notice colors

Observe objects

Let your eyes move gently

👉 This tells your brain: “There is no immediate threat.”

🌿 4. Support Your Vagus Nerve

Your vagus nerve plays a key role in regulating your nervous system. It’s the longest nerve in the body and wanders from the brain down into your neck, chest, and abdomen. When you activate the Vagus Nerve, you’re also activating the Parasympathetic Nervous System (rest and digest).

Simple ways to activate it:

Humming

Singing

Gargling

Gentle neck massage

These small practices can help shift your body toward healing mode.

🌿 5. Use the 5-4-3-2-1 Reset

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or tense, try this exercise:

Notice 5 things you can see

4 things you can touch

3 things you can hear

2 things you can smell

1 thing you can taste

👉 This brings you back to the present moment and activates your body’s relaxation response.

A Faith-Filled Perspective on Healing

For many women, stress isn’t just physical. It’s emotional and spiritual.

It comes from:

Carrying too much

Trying to control everything

Feeling like you always have to “hold it together”

But true healing often begins with release.

Letting go.
Trusting God.
Allowing yourself to rest.

As Scripture reminds us:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Your body was not created to live in constant pressure. God did not create you to be in a state of chronic stress.

You Don’t Need More Willpower, You Need a Calmer Body

If you feel like your body has changed…

If nothing seems to be working anymore…

This may be the missing piece.

👉 You don’t need to push harder.
👉 You need to support your body differently.

Because healing doesn’t begin when you do more.

It begins when your body no longer feels like it has to fight.

Ready for Support?

If this resonates with you, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

I offer a free consult where we can talk through:

What’s going on with your body

What may be keeping you stuck

And what next steps make sense for you

Remember, your body isn’t broken.

It’s protecting you.

And when it feels safe again…
that’s when healing truly begins.

I work with women in perimenopause and menopause who struggle with digestion, fatigue, and stress. They’re eating healthier, trying to exercise, cutting back on sugar, and yet they feel more tired, more bloated, and more frustrated than ever.

Here’s the truth:

It’s not just hormones. And it’s not just aging.
It’s how your body is responding to stress now.

Your Body Didn’t Break, It Became More Sensitive

After 45, your body goes through natural hormonal shifts. But what most women don’t realize is this:

Your body also becomes more sensitive to stress.

That means:

You don’t bounce back as quickly

Your energy dips more easily

Your digestion becomes more reactive

Weight gain happens more easily (especially around the midsection)

What used to “work” at 30 or even 35 doesn’t work the same way now.

And that’s not a failure. It’s a signal.

What is the Stress Response

When your body perceives stress (whether physical or emotional), it shifts into a protective mode. It’s your body’s rapid autoimatic emergency reaction system designed by God to protect you safe from threats. It is triggered by the amygdala, which releases hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, increasing your heart rate, blood pressure, and alertness to fight, flee, or freeze.

This affects:

Hormones (especially cortisol, estrogen, and progesterone)

Blood sugar balance

Digestion and gut health

Fat storage

This is why you might notice:

Waking up at 2–3 AM

Afternoon energy crashes

Increased belly weight

Bloating or IBS-type symptoms

Feeling “wired but tired”

Your body is not working against you. It’s trying to protect you.

Stress Isn’t Just “Being Busy”

This is where so many women I talk to feel seen for the first time. Stress isn’t only emotional. It can also be:

Physical Stress

Poor sleep

Inflammation

Over-exercising

Internal Stress

Blood sugar crashes from skipping meals

Undereating or restrictive dieting

Digestive issues and gut imbalance

Emotional Stress

Caregiving responsibilities

Life transitions

Pressure to “do it all” (“Superwoman syndrome”)

Sometimes, the biggest stress on your body isn’t your schedule… it’s what’s happening internally.

Why Nothing Seems to Be Working Anymore

If your body is stuck in a stress response, it will:

Hold onto weight

Slow down digestion

Increase inflammation (think more aches and pains, brain fog, poor sleep)

Resist change

Even healthy habits can backfire if your body feels overwhelmed.

That’s why pushing harder by eating less, exercising more, trying to be “perfect,” often makes things worse.

The Shift Your Body is Asking For

Healing after 45 isn’t about doing more. It’s about supporting your body differently.

Start here:

1. Eat consistently

Don’t skip meals. Eating regularly stabilizes blood sugar and reduces stress on the body.

2. Slow down your meals

Even taking 15 minutes to eat can support digestion and calm your nervous system. This leads to better digestion, more nutrient absorption, and less digestive issues like cramps, gas, heartburn, and diarrhea.

3. Create daily moments of stillness

Just 5–10 minutes of quiet, prayer, or deep breathing can shift your nervous system. Stillness and silence are not normal in our modern world but are needed!

A Faith-Filled Perspective on Stress and Healing

So often, stress is rooted in the pressure to do more, be more, and hold everything together.

But true healing includes learning to:

Rest

Release control

Trust God with what you’re carrying

As it says in Scripture: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Your body was not designed to live in constant pressure.

Your body was not designed to live in constant pressure.

You Don’t Need More Willpower

You don’t need more willpower. You need a calmer body and mind.

If you feel like your body has changed overnight…

If you’re doing everything right but still not seeing results…

This may be your missing piece.

You don’t need to push harder.
You need to support your body in coming out of stress mode.

Your Body Is Not Broken

Remember, your body isn’t broken. It’s responding exactly the way it was designed to. It just needs the right support now. If you’d like to have my support like so many others have done, click here to schedule a free 20-minute consult. If you’re not sure of what IBS stands for, it’s Irritable Bowel Syndrome and is a common (not normal) long-term functional disorder of the large intestine. It causes abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and irregular bowel habits like diarrhea, constipation, or both. It does not usually cause permanent damage or increase cancer risk.

IBS and IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) have similar symptoms but IBD (like in Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis) involves actual structural damage and permanent damage in the digestive tract and increased risk of cancer.

And IBD is considered an autoimmune disease whereas IBS is not. Neither is pleasant at all!

The Gut-Brain Connection

You have something called the gut-brain connection.

Your brain and your gut are constantly communicating.

So when your brain senses stress, your gut responds immediately. In fact, some experts even call the gut your second brain. That’s how important it is to your body and wellness.

Your gut doesn’t just process food. It processes stress.

What Happens in Your Gut During Stress

Break it down clearly:

When your body is in stress mode:

Blood flow moves away from digestion (remember, your body/cortisol and adrenaline is giving energy to you running away from the tiger or robber).

Stomach acid decreases

Enzymes decrease

Motility changes (too fast or too slow)

👉 Result:

Bloating

Gas

Constipation OR diarrhea

Food sensitivities

👉 Your body is prioritizing survival—not digestion.

Why IBS Symptoms Get Worse after 45

After 40 or 45, your hormones change. Here are some specific ways:

Lower progesterone → less gut relaxation (remember progesterone is your happy and calming and resting hormone) so the less of it, the less your gut will be at rest → which means poor digestion

Estrogen fluctuations → gut sensitivity

Increased stress sensitivity → more flare-ups

👉 The same stress that didn’t affect your gut before… now shows up as symptoms.

This is Why Food Feels “Inconsistent”

This is a HUGE lightbulb moment:

You might think: This food bothers me but only sometimes.

That’s because it’s not just the food.

It’s:

Your stress level that day

How fast you ate

Your nervous system state

The same meal in a calm body = very different than in a stressed body.

So if the same foods affect you differently or inconsistently, it’s probably time to look at your stress in your life.

The IBS-Stress Cycle

Here’s a simple way of looking at the connection between stress and gut issues.

Stress → gut symptoms → more stress → worse symptoms

Many women get stuck here. And they start fearing food, when the real issue is the stress response.

Think about this… Have you ever:

Eaten quickly in the car or standing up?

Felt rushed or overwhelmed while eating?

Noticed bloating after a stressful day?

That’s your body telling you something. It’s giving you warning signs.

Faith and Stress

Your body was not designed to live in constant stress. God did not create us to normalize stress and a hyper-stressful life.

And your gut is one of the first places that shows it.

Healing isn’t just about removing foods. It’s about restoring peace in your body and your life.

Practical Tips: 3 Gut-Calming Shifts

1. Slow down before you eat

Take 3–5 deep breaths

Pause and sit down

👉 This signals your body: it’s safe to digest.

2. Eat without distractions (as much as possible)

Turn off TV / phone

Even one calm meal a day helps – so maybe pick dinner when you and your family can enjoy it together and talk and connect.

3. Don’t skip meals

Prevents blood sugar stress → reduces gut stress. When you skip meals, your body stresses due to low blood sugar and also because it’s worrying about where the next meal is coming from.

Bonus Strategy: 5-4-3-2-1 Sensory Technique

Bonus tip: There’s a strategy many are doing to help manage stress and anxiety called the 5-4-3-2-1 technique. You look around for 5 things you can see (a leaf, shadow, a pen). Then 4 things you can touch (feet on floor, your hair, texture on the chair). Then 3 things you can hear (birds, a fan, traffic outside). Then 2 things you can smell (identify scents like coffee, your clothing, a candle). And then finally, one thing you can taste (toothpaste, lingering coffee or lunch, or even pop a mint into your mouth).
